At the top of the list is a caution to taxpayers not to panic. “Many of these letters can be dealt with simply and painlessly,” IRS said. As described by the agency, there are a variety of reasons a notice may be sent. For example, the notice may request payment of taxes, notify a taxpayer of a change to his or her account, or request additional information. The notice normally covers a very specific issue about an account or tax return, IRS said. Each letter and notice offers specific instructions on what needs to be done to satisfy the inquiry. A taxpayer should review the correspondence and compare it with the information on his or her return. If the taxpayer agrees with the correction to his or her account, usually no reply is necessary unless a payment is due. If there is any disagreement with the correction IRS made, it is important to respond as requested. A taxpayer should retain copies of any correspondence with IRS.
